A dividend is simply a company sharing part of its profits with its shareholders, so if at the time a company declares dividends you hold its shares, you get to share in the profits (by way of dividends) of the company.
Dividends are typically paid quarterly or every three months, although there are companies that pay dividends monthly (most REIT pay monthly) or even semi-annually.
